2007 Cystic Fibrosis Award Winners

In 2007 BHNFC participated in the Bangers & Cash fundraising event to support Cystic Fibrosis Victoria.

Bangers & Cash is a Cystic Fibrosis campaign held annually in April/May.  Through the VAFA every club held sausage sizzles with all profits going to help support awareness and research for families struck down with a cystic fibrosis sufferer.  With many generous rewards offered as incentives for clubs.

Our Bangers & Cash day was held at Elgar Park against North Brunswick in round 12.  We manage to raise $450, this amount earned us the title of "biggest improvement from previous year" with a improvement from around $20 to be the second largest fundraiser overall.

Being the biggest improver from the previous year, we were awarded a marvellous brand new BBQ from Barbeques Galore.  Although the reward for the BHNFC is great, the real reward is being able to contribute to this cause and many others as a football club.  Cystic Fibrosis doesn't have the awareness that it deserves.  All funds raised might help current sufferers have a better quality of live, but its the prevention and awareness that is what the Cystic Fibrosis community is trying to inform people on.

One in 25 people carries the CF gene that probably aren't aware that they are a carrier.  That means that there are maybe 2 or 3 maybe even 4 people at Box Hill North FC that are carriers and have no idea!

If 2 people carry the gene, with every pregnancy there is a one in 4 chance that the child will have CF.  There is a 2 in 4 chance that the child will not have CF but will carry the gene and a one in 4 chance that the child will not have CF and not be a carrier.

Even one could probably explain what happens to a cancer sufferer.  Cystic Fibrosis is the most common serious genetic condition in Australian children today, affecting one in every 2,500 babies.  The mucous glands cause normal mucus to change to a thick, sticky substance.  This mucus clogs the tiny passages in the lungs and traps bacteria.  Repeated infections and blockages can cause irreversible lung damage and death.  The pancreas is also impaired, preventing the release of enzymes which are needed for the digestion of food.  This means that people who have CF can have problems with nutrition.

Once again in 2008 the VAFA is pledging its help to CF Victoria.  I hope everyone is a supportive as they were last year and realises how lucky we are to be able to get out and have a kick every Saturday with our mates!

Thanks to all the pitched in to help

There many other campaigns that Cystic Fibrosis run.  If you see them out and about make sure you get behind them.
